Wanted: A CEO For Merck… Who’ll Succeed Clark?

dick-clarkDick Clark turns 65 in March 2011, when a successor will have to be named. And ever since becoming Merck ceo in 2005, when his predecessor, Ray Gilmartin, stepped down in the wake of the Vioxx scandal, the low-key executive says his primary ojbective has been to ensure a successor is in place. And an announcement would be expected by the middle of next year.

But who? “If the ceo succession planning does not go the way I think it’s going to go, then my time as ceo will be a failure. That’s how strong I feel about getting this right,” he tells Reuters, while declining to comment on where the next Merck leader may come from. “But there will be plenty of internal talent to select from.” Still no word on Fred Hassan’s next move, though.

  1. Hey Ed –

    I cannot resist.

Sorry to “serial post” this, here — but there’s this one guy — and by late 2010, he’ll be “tan, rested and ready”(!). . . .

Truly frightening (actually, the would-be replacement CEO will be 64 by then, so I think we’re safe).

    Namaste
