A New Tote Bag For Fashionable Sales Reps

repbag2File this under stylish? Depends upon your taste, but what better way to lug around a laptop, papers and, of course, samples, than in an eco-friendly, specially made bag? At the urging of employees, GlaxoSmithKline asked Redhanded Bags, which is located near the drugmaker’s North Carolina offices, to dream up a design that could make a rep’s life oh-so easy to carry everywhere they go.

repbag3A few Glaxo employees “read an article in the local newspaper about a local firm designing bags that were green, did not use animal leather and were fair trade,” a Glaxo spokeswoman writes us. “…we have purchased a number of bags for some of our employees to test in the field. This is an issue of ergonomics primarily, seeking the laptop bag that will result in the fewest injuries.”

repbag1Indeed, Redhanded president Aaron Turney says that Glaxo provided some design requirements and the bagmaker came up with something easy on the lumbar. Extra padding makes it possible to carry all sort of things to the doc’s office or the hospital. “You can put 100 lbs of stuff in it before I would begin to worry about it,” he tells us.

“Handbags should turn heads, bring out inner beauty, and contribute to a sustainable environment,” says his partner, Tracy Russomano. “Pharmaceutical sales reps can look great and be eco-friendly.” All this for only $189 a bag, although they’re willing to deal for large orders. Glaxo reps, by the way, aren’t required to use one. In any event, which would you like to be seen wearing?

  1. Are there really gonna’ be any true-pharma sales reps left in the US, by 2012?

Seems like an extinction market. . .

So sorry; I do not mean to be crass, or uncharitable at Christmas-time — but the whole notion of what “detailing” is going to be about, at least in the US — is undergoing so-profound a transformation, that the role may not even exist (in its current form) by 2015.

Who knows? What do all you learned, well-informed and experienced others think?

Will this be a good (bicyclist) messngers’-bag, nonetheless?

    Namaste

  2. The Insider has it just right — I hadn’t clicked on his link, before I wrote the above. Do go look at pharmagossip’s great graphic!

  3. How about imitation snakeskin? That would be awesome.

  4. Which one did they send you Ed?

  5. GSK could pack those eco-friendly bags with non-perishable foods and drop them off at the local food pantry,.. a good deed goes unridiculed,.Yes?

  6. I am partial to bag number one but did you take a look at the handcuff clutch model http://www.redhandedbags.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=34

  7. Cliff Mintz,

OMG, how funny was that. I wonder if Dan Troy bought one for his wife this holiday season.

  8. The bag featured on PharmaGossip holds up to four pizzas. Hope the bags are insulated. You know how those office cows hate cold pizza. Hot pizza = more face time in front of doctor. Worth thew extra cost for adding insulation.
