Hello, everyone. Nothing like a brisk Sunday morning to move you to curl up and catch up on some reading. Here on the sunny but quite cold Pharmalot corporate campus, we are doing just that. And, of course, quaffing a cup or three of needed stimulation. Later, we hope to take the official Pharmalot mascot for the usual constitutional. Whatever you do today, we hope it is enjoyable. Meanwhile, here are a few items to keep you fresh. Have a great time…
GLAXOSMITHKLINE WILL CUT UP TO 4,000 JOBS as part of its plans to restructure its workforce and focus increasingly on emerging markets, according to The Times of London. The bulk of the cuts will be in America and Europe, and are part of the drugmaker’s efforts to shift resources away from low-growth territories into parts of the world with greater scope to expand sales. Glaxo employs 99,000 worldwide and is expected to reveal plans when earnings are announced on Thursday. There will also be details about making R&D more cost-efficient.
Fat pills may once again become the rage if a trio of small companies have their way with the FDA. The San Diego Union-Tribune does a straightforward round-up that highlights the efforts by Arena Pharmaceuticals, Orexigen Therapeutics and Vivus to successfully develop obesity drugs without encountering the problems suffered more than a decade ago by Wyeth and its ill-fated fen-phen weight-loss cocktail.
The former mayor of Indianapolis talks about settling into his new job after a celebrated case of electoral dysfunction. Bart Peterson, a Democrat, tells The Indianapolis Star a wee bit about getting trounced in a recent election and his new life as a lobbyist for one of the city’s biggest and most venerable employers.
