Conflicts of Interest Comes To A Talk Show Near You

As the controversy over industry influence over doctors and patient care heats up, Fox News journalist John Stossel plans to explore conflicts of interest on an upcoming show. So tomorrow, Feb. 11, he’s invited two outspoken physicians - Tom Stossel (see here) and Arnold Relman - to debate the issue (weather permitting, of course). And it appears that the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators is concerned the studio audience will not work in its favor.
ACRE has been active in the debate by arguing that financial incentives given to docs do not influence treatment and recently fought a proposal in Minnesota to limit industry influence (see here). A founding member of the organization is Thomas Sullivan, who last year gained notice for his criticism of US Senator Chuck Grassley for his investigations into conflicts of interest. UPDATE: Speaking of which, we should note that Tom Stossel is John Stossel’s older brother (another physician wasn’t available?)
The email below was sent by ACRE to its members and other interested folks, and notes the American Medical Student Association, which regulary monitors med schools and their policies toward industry (see here), expects to show up in big numbers. ACRE urges docs and patients to turn out as well. Maybe you can attend…

Fox News “Stossel” Show Taping – Need Patient and Physician Audience Attendees
When: Thursday February 11, 2009 at 9:00am – 11:15 am
Where: Midtown west in Manhattan (Near 47th Street), New York, NY
There will be a taping of the Stossel show, the topic will be on conflicts of interest, guests will be Thomas Stossel, MD (different that host John Stossel) and Arnold Relman-Angel, MD. The enthusiastic and very activist American Medical Student Association promised the producer they were bringing a huge number.
It is important that as many patients and physicians attend this event and be in the audience especially if they are willing to speak from the audience. The program will air on either Feb. 18th or 25th. If you would like to attend please send an email to Diann Rohde of the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators, requesting to attend.

hahah, ed, a great and funny post.

Apparently Dr Relman will be on the show for only 8 minutes, via video link from Boston. Will Brother Tom get more time? Contrary to ACRE’s PR machine, few med students are planning to go. Too many people have been burned in the past by Brother John’s “fair and balanced” approach — people fear dishonest editing after the taping.

what a waste of time.
