If Provenge Is Approved, Dendreon Stock Will…

Everyone loves a bet and nothing, it seems, is more intensely speculative this week than the betting on Dendreon’s Provenge prostate cancer vaccine, which threatens to revolutionize the approach taken to treatment. The FDA approval date is May 1 and so investors are anxious over the news.
This comes after three years of anticipation, disappointment and controversy over clinical trial results and the FDA approval process, which prompted protests (see here), lawsuits and an SEC investigation (see here), not to mention a run-up in the stock over the past year.
Rcently, the stock has been hovering around $39 and some say that’s about where Dendreon shares should be trading. Even if approved, which most analysts expect, there is skepticism about Dendreon’s ability to make what are essentially customized vaccines. Boosters, however, say the vaccines maker has its act together and an overseas deal would push the stock still higher. Yet there is also betting the stock has had its day.
What do you think?

I don’t see how we can expect rational results from any industry who’s sole financial incentive is to keep us all partially healthy - well enough to work & fund our insurance plans - but still sick enough to be taking medication. We need to completely change the paradigm of how health care is handled.

I almost bought at about $3.00. For those that were following you know how fast it jumped to over $20.00. My opinion, there certainly are pitfalls with this. In terms of revolutionizing anything, I’d personally would be looking at companies developing Monoclocal Antibody treatments. But, Dendreon certainly has potential to jump over $39.00
Why are we here? Because we’re here. Roll the bones!

“We need to completely change the paradigm of how health care is handled.”
Well said, SMU. I completely agree. How do we accomplish this change? With enough people behind an idea, we could change the world.
In many respects, you can liken the way we’re going to a locomotive, without brakes, that’s pickup speed. It’s completely amoral, driven solely by the almighty profit motive. I fear that it will soon be the death of us all.
In many areas of research today, we are treading in areas where only God should have dominion. All that need happen now is a lab “accident”, an “accidental” lab release, a miscalculation.
Harpy may have prophecized our future, in a recent pharmalot thread, when he stated,
“…I think the end will actually be brought about by Monsanto. look what a great start they’ve made by almost taking out the honeybees! or some unnatural collusion between the defense contractors, big pharma, and Monsanto will bring about the Zombie Apocalypse. mark my words…”

There was a time when such a comment would have been considered “over the top”. Not so, anymore. We seem to be racing headlong toward oblivion.

I dont see anyway the stock won’t react in immediate term to an approval but go up. This is a new treatment & investors have been waiting for 3 years - won’t be able to help themselves - 10% jump.
