In Memory Of Bob Franks, Pharma Guy

Over the many years covering the pharmaceutical industry, we have met all types of supporters and critics - some are thoughtful, some less so. But seeking out insights, not just news, is always a valuable exercise and one of our favorites sources was Bob Franks, a former New Jersey Congressman who, most recently, spent the last few years heading the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey, a trade group for drug and device makers.
At heart, Franks was a gentleman. At a time when politics seems increasingly defined by divisiveness and idealogues, he was as thoughtful and gracious as he was clever and quick. And he brought those qualities to his role at HINJ, where he was a tireless advocate for the pharmaceutical industry during a stretch when supporters always seemed to be on the defensive over safety and pricing problems. Despite such an environment, Franks was always more than happy to circle an issue and engage in useful back-and-forth banter. He was informative, curious and amiable. A session - on or off the record - was not just useful, in fact, but a pleasure.
And so we were very saddened to learn that Bob passed away this weekend at the very young age of 58 due to cancer. He left too soon and will be missed. We hope he left his wife and daughters many wonderful memories. As for us, we will remember his thoughtful approach to issues and the sense of humor he brought to his encounters. So long, Bob. And thanks.

That was a wonderful tribute, Ed. A politician and a gentleman, who will surely be missed by many.

I didn’t agree with him often — or at all, actually.
But Ed’s take accurately reflects my experience with the man, as well — ever polite, affable, willing to listen — and a truly-old-fashioned gentleman — implying all the very best of what the use of that term might evoke.
I wish only peace and joy (for a life well-lived), for the loved ones he now leaves behind.
