The Provenge Prostate Cancer Vaccine Will Cost…

This is a very big guessing game, because so much money is riding on the revenue Dendreon can realize from its vaccine - assuming FDA approval is granted on May 1. You may recall that a Provenge clinical trial showed men lived a median time of four months longer than those on a placebo, with few side effects. As Xconomy notes, Provenge would be the first in a new class of therapies that actively stimulate the immune system to fight tumors, and the site did a spot check of what analysts are betting. The average price - $61,714.
Ren Benjamin - Rodman & Renshaw - $40,000
Cory Kasimov - JP Morgan - $65,000
Howard Liang - Leerink Swann - $60,000
David Miller - Biotech Stock Research - $72,000
Mark Monane - Needham - $50,000
Christopher Raymond - Robert W. Baird - $70,000
Eric Schmidt - Cowen - $75,000

Outrageous yes, but on the other hand, what would a full course of radiation and chemotherapy run for a prostrate cancer patient?
I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and she had to go for radiation 5 days a week and 1 chemo session a week for 7 weeks in a row. I’ll bet her treatment cost over $75,000 - the highest estimate for Provenge.
In the case of Provenge, patients get the vaccine and that’s it, and without all the side effects of radiation and chemo.
