Pharma Needs To ‘Feel Loved And Wanted’

About 6,000 ‘blue chip’ jobs are leaving the UK as Pfizer, Glaxo and AstraZeneca gradually shutter operations. The development hit home when Pfizer recently decided to close its Sandwich facility, eliminating 2,400 positions, a move that came just after weeks the government claimed pharma is a big part of the future (see here and here). But many jobs will eventually find their way to other shores which are more competitive, according to Thom Thorp of Eli Lilly.
“I’m concerned about the future of pharma in the UK ….” Confederation British Industry director general John Cridland tells the UK’s Channel 4. “I think government has taken the sector a little bit for granted. I’ll say it on behalf of the sector. They need to feel loved and wanted. The UK is not as good a place to invest as it was three years ago when we went into recession.”

The key is reinventing your identity. When my former company, Boots Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was acquired by BASF in 1995 the entire pharmaceutical operation on Pennyfoot St. in Nottingham was shuttered, and many scientists were out of work. The facility then completely reinvented itself into what is now called BioCity UK, and is Europe’s fastest growing bioscience incubator. Yes, it can be done.
